When some friends came into town last week, I had the opportunity to visit Alcatraz Island. I had been before, but that was in 2009, right after I moved to the Bay Area. This place is seriously cool and definitely worth a second trip.
We took the first boat out to the island so the island wasn’t crowded yet. We didn’t even have to wait at all for the audio tour! As you can probably tell, the weather was absolutely perfect; Karl the fog was nowhere in sight.
Scroll on to see a handful of my favorite snaps from the visit as well as see my tips for what to wear during your visit.

If you’re planning a trip to Alcatraz and wondering what to wear, I want to share a few tips from my personal experience.
Light layers are key in San Francisco. The city is full of micro climates and the weather can change without warning. On my visit, the projected temperature range while I was there was between 50 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. I wore a medium weight sweater under a medium weight jacket, but I also stowed a t-shirt in my bag since 68 can feel more like 80 if there isn’t an ocean breeze.
I wore a faux leather backpack to keep strap slippage off my mind and my hands free to snap photos. It was perfect for stowing all of the day’s necessities while not making me feel loaded down.
The most important part of your outfit, however, is comfortable shoes. You do a lot of walking and much of it is up and down steep slopes and/or stairs. By the time I made my escape from Alcatraz (see what I did there?), I was at nearly 10,000 steps for the day. They say the climb is equivalent to going up 13 stories so, seriously, don’t skimp here.
