I remember the moment I came up with the idea for this family Halloween costume. My cutie little two-year-old had just learned the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and would sing them to me over and over during our pre-bedtime snuggles. Suddenly it hit me that we could dress up as that song for Halloween.
It wasn’t long before I had decided that Avery would be the star (because she is one, obvi), I would be “Like a Diamond in the Sky”, and my husband would be “Up Above the World So High.” The great thing about these costumes is that they can be super simple or they can get quite extravagant–your choice! Read on to hear how I pulled together these costumes.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Costume
For this costume, I pretty much just started pulling together all things with stars and sparkle. I found the cute star print dress and silver sparkle Toms on Poshmark for a steal and picked up the star headband from Target. That could have been enough, but before I knew it, we had bought some upholstery foam padding, cut it into a star shape, and spray painted it gold. We used some adhesive spray glue to attach some wide grosgrain ribbon to the star as straps. Not being able to stop there, I purchased a thin wooden dowel, some gold glitter foam sheets, some metallic wired ribbon, and some foam star stickers to create a star wand.

Up Above the World So High Costume
My husband isn’t much for costumes so I usually try to take it easy on him when I can. It was really easy to complete his costume when I found a t-shirt with an earth printed on it. You just put that twinkle twinkle little star on his shoulders and suddenly he becomes “up above the world so high.” If you like to get a little more into costume mode, you could create a sandwich board with posters and some ribbon or get super fancy and make a 3D model out of paper mache!

Like a Diamond In the Sky Costume
For the sky part of my costume, I hot glued a bunch of poly-fill onto the frame of an old umbrella and carried it along with a cloud-shaped clutch purse. As for the diamond side, I just slipped into a very sparkly dress and voila! I had purchased a set of diamond eye appliques to wear, but when it came time, they were sadly nowhere to be found.

It was the perfect family Halloween costume for our little family of three and so age-appropriate for our toddler. This year, I tried to ask Avery what she wanted to be for Halloween and all she said was purple. So we’ll see what we end up being this year.
